Ancien Chef du département des Arts visuels et Artiste en résidence au Banff Centre, Takao Tanabe est né à Prince Rupert en 1926. De 1946 à 1949, il a fait des études à la Winnipeg School of Art avant de partir à New York où il a continué à se perfectionner à la Brooklyn Museum Art School. Après avoir passé l’été de 1953 à la Banff School of Fine Arts [Banff Centre], Tanabe a poursuivi des études à la Central School of Arts and Crafts à Londres en Angleterre et à l’Université de Tokyo au Japon. Takao Tanabe est le récipiendaire de plusieurs bourses, comprenant l’Emily Carr Foundation Scholarship en 1953 et celles du Conseil des arts du Canada en 1959 et en 1969. Plus récemment, Tanabe a été nommé à l’Ordre du Canada pour souligner ses contributions continues au paysage culturel du Canada et son soutien assidu envers les artistes plus jeunes. Membre de l’Académie royale des arts du Canada, Takao Tanabe a été le sujet de nombreuses expositions au niveau national et international, il a produit un bon nombre de commandes publiques et ses œuvres sont représentées au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et dans beaucoup d’autres collections publiques et privées. En tant que paysagiste canadien, Tanabe a joui d’une carrière longue et distinguée. Ses tableaux réalisés à l’acrylique se distinguent par une exécution en minces lavis et dont les qualités subtiles et translucides rappellent l’aquarelle.
